From a hike to caving in the mine – after the tour of the museum area, educators can choose between different tours of the Saint-Jean Engelsbourg mine.

We provide documentation to help prepare for the tour and ensure things goes as well as possible.

The “Classic”

The so-called “Classic” tour takes the visitor on a horizontal course of more than 850 m, with 8 stations along the way. A great way to discover the Saint-Jean Engelsbourg mine, which was mined from the 16th to the 20th century.

CAVING TOURS

The more physically demanding tours are supervised by a state-qualified caving guide. All the equipment required for the tour is provided (boots, full suit, harness, helmet with headlight). These tours are available all year round, but need to be booked.

Please note that the times stated for tours are based on averages. They make take longer or finish earlier, depending on the size of the group.

The “Immersion Plus”

The “Immersion Plus” tour picks up on the classic tour, but adds the discovery of a 16th century network that remains virtually unchanged. There is also a ladder to climb and a rope descent of about 20 m.

The “Puits du fond”

The “Puits du fond” tour involves a course that is a bit more physically demanding. It takes the visitor to the heart of the mountain after descending 4 wells, which equates to a rope descent of about 100 m.

The “Mine de zinc” tour involves a course that is reasonably physically demanding. It provides a chance to discover the 16th-century gallery, with various climbs and abseiling.

The “Grande Colonne”

The “Grande Colonne” tour provides a full but fun introduction to caving in the mine with:
– A rigid ladder climb of about 20 m
– A walk along a ledge, with visitors secured by a lifeline
– A zipline on the way back
– And a descent on a rope of about 20 m

The “Via Ferrata” tour is all about fun and climbing in an underground environment. It covers a 100 m course, with a 20 m difference in height. The tour ends with a zipline and a 20 m abseil.
